Five on Friday

{one}

I have to brag on myself for just a second...We had a weight loss challenge this past month at work and I won!!  I am so proud of myself.  I had big plans to workout a lot to lose the weight, but that didn't happen as much as I would have liked.  I did really watch what I ate and I kept walking.  I lost 9 lbs in the month of June.  I have lost 51 lbs since giving birth 4 1/2 months ago!  (I gained 57 lbs while pregnant)  I signed up for the weight loss challenge at work this month too!

I really want to get back in to baking more.  I always love baking and I don't know why I don't do it more often?! I know my husband would enjoy it if I would make more sweet treats, but it may not help me get back to pre-baby weight!  I am thinking about baking these good looking cupcakes this weekend.

My husband and I have been talking more about getting a jogging stroller.  He runs a lot more than I do, but I have high hopes of starting to run/jog soon.  It's going to take me a little bit to get to where I can run for any significant length of time, but I have to start somewhere.  There are tons of options for strollers out there, and it is very overwhelming!  Any suggestions??

{four}

I could very easily become addicted to online shopping!  It is so convenient to sit on my comfy couch and buy all the things my heart desires without fighting the crowds and driving all over town, not to mention our city has terrible shopping options.  Lately (this week-yikes!) I have ordered myself a pair of shorts, a dress, and a shirt.  I have ordered a Christmas dress (already?! I know!!), pair of shorts, and more bows for Lillian.  My husband doesn't seem too surprised these days when a package arrives at the door.

There are still a few things I have left to do in Lillian's nursery.  I am not sure why I have not done them yet because they are simple tasks.  I need to buy and hang 2 white shelves.  I need to order a cover for her changing pad (a blanket is our cover right now).  I also want to use some of the left over fabric from her bedding to make this.  Maybe this weekend I will have the motivation to get these things done.  Once I am finished with those things, I will post a picture or two of her room and how it was transformed into a nursery.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! TGIF!

38 weeks

We had our weekly appointment today and it went well.  My blood pressure is still great despite my never ending swelling!  I have gained 6 lbs in the last week and I can say it has to be at least 95% fluid!  I feel so puffy.   I am a "good 1cm" dilated and there is some effacement, she just didn't give it a percentage.  Lillian is engaged because the doc said she could feel her head.  I was very happy with all of this news!  We are scheduled to go back next Monday and if I have more progression we could talk options of induction at that time.  Our doctor is not saying she is wanting to induce, she just said that at that time we could talk more seriously about it if it was something we would be interested in.  I have mixed feelings about being induced.  This week Jon and I will for sure have many discussions on what we feel we should do and we will also be praying for God to help us with this decision.  Hopefully God and Lillian have it worked out so that Jon and I don't have to make the decision and she will just make her debut all on her own.
I have not been sleeping well, which makes for a grumpy me, especially in the mornings.  The puffiness is affecting not only my hands causing the carpal tunnel, but now I am having trouble with the alignment of my teeth when I close my mouth.  My face/jaw is swollen and causing it to hurt when I close my mouth all the way.  Oh the joys of pregnancy!  Lillian is still a wiggle worm.  I hear lots of moms say that the one thing they miss about being pregnant is feeling the baby move in their tummy.  I can see why.  I still think it is such a cool feeling.  It can be uncomfortable at times, but it is still amazing to me. I have been walking as often as I can, which ended up being 3 times this past week.  As I was finishing up with my walk on Sunday I started having contractions.  Just as I thought I should start timing them they pretty much stopped.  I guess it did something though since I am dilated more this week than I was last week.
Lillian's room is pretty much finished.  We have the decal complete and it is staying on the wall, so far. We hung her bow holder and put bows on it.  I finished another DIY project and hung it above her changing table/dresser.  We still need to get some white shelves and hang them, and I want to get two mirrors to hang on either side of the latest DIY project.  Her bedding is not yet complete, but I anticipate it won't be too much longer.  We are not really pressed for time with her bedding anyway because she will be sleeping in our room in a bassinet for at least a few weeks.
This weekend I am going to try to put together some meals that can be frozen.  I have pinned quite a few options, so we will see what I can come up with.  In those first few weeks that Lillian is here I think it will definitely help to have dinner already made, be able to pull it out of the freezer and heat it up!  Oh yea, don't forget about the Meal Train!  We would be so grateful for any food people want to bring us, and we would love to see you and for you to meet our sweet Lillian!
Jon and I are really getting anxious and excited about meeting our baby girl!  We are trying to be as patient as possible!

DIY Disaster aka Lillian's Dresser

Once we found out we were having a girl, I immediately starting thinking about how I wanted to decorate her nursery.  I fell in love with the white wrought iron cribs and really liked the "old timey" or classic look of them.  After I got lucky and found one for an incredible price on Craigslist, I started thinking about what I wanted for her dresser/changing table.  I knew I wanted something different and also something she could use as she got older.  I decided I wanted to get an antique dresser and redo it.  This was my inspiration...

I started looking around town at different antique shops.  I was having a hard time finding one that I felt would work just right.  Most were too tall and skinny or too short and wide.  I had friended Saved By Grace antique shop on facebook and one day, to my surprise, they posted a dresser that I thought would work out just right.  I went to the store the next day to check it out and measure it (I had to make sure a changing pad would fit on top).  This is what I found and had to get....

-sorry the picture quality is pretty bad-
I called my mom to tell her about it, and she decided to buy it for Lillian, and my step-dad went and picked it up for us and brought it to our house!  I then went to doing some research to figure out how we would redo it.  I asked at the antique shop how they redid a lot of their furniture and they told me with chalk paint.  I then started researching chalk paint and came across milk paint.  Miss Mustard Seed milk paint seemed to be the best that I could find.  I read all about it, watched every video tutorial, and read numerous other bloggers experiences with this milk paint.  It really appealed to me because it was a natural paint (therefore I could be the one to paint with it), it did not require any prepping of the dresser (stripping, sanding, etc.), and the finished product was just what I was going for.

I ordered the paint (because of course, nowhere near here sells the stuff).  I decided on the color ironstone, which is basically a white or antique white.  The paint arrives in a powder form and you mix it with water and get started.

I started to paint, but my sweet husband took over because I was not doing a very good job.  (I have to give my husband so much credit for taking on these nursery projects and doing them without complaining and with a smile on his face!)  So as you can see in the picture above he just painted the dresser, just like the website and tutorials said to do.

After a couple of hours some of the paint started to chip off, giving it a distressed look, which is what we were going for.

-close up of the chipping-

We dusted off what had "chipped up,"  and Jon painted another coat.  We ended up having to paint a total of three coats to get the dresser as white as we wanted.

As you can see in the picture above, the paint ended up chipping off quite a bit.  I did not anticipate so much of the paint chipping off.  One of the tutorials said that you never know how much with chip and how much will stay on, it's just the nature of the paint and a gamble you have to take.

After dusting off the areas that chipped off the dresser looked like the above picture.  It was a lot more than I had wanted and I was not really happy with the result.  Jon and I talked about what we should do to make it look better.  We came up with a few options..1 totally strip it down and start over with a different type of paint and technique   2  sand it down and paint over it with a basic white paint and not necessarily have a distressed look or   3 lightly sand it and put a clear varnish and call it done.   At this point I was just ready to get it finished, and I also didn't want to add a lot more work for Jon to do, so I decided on option 3.

Jon bought a super fine sand paper and a can of polyurethane.  He barely sanded the whole thing, trying not to make anymore paint come off.  He then painted on 2 coats of polyurethane.  It ended up looking better than I had thought, or maybe the look of it just grew on me.  I went to Hobby Lobby and bought new hardware for the drawers.  This is our finished project...

It definitely does not look like the picture that was my inspiration, nor does it look like I wanted it to, but I am satisfied.  I think it will look even better with her changing pad on top.  I'm sure we will eventually have to change the look of it, but for now it works and looks good with the other furniture in her room.

Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

When I was planning the gender reveal party I knew I wanted to have cute party favors for those that came. I'm not sure where the idea came from but I decided on clock sugar cookies. I had been wanting to make sugar cookies and decorate them with royal icing. I figured this was the best time because it would be an easy shape and design. I went to some of my favorite blog recipe sites and compared recipes and picked out what to do. I went with a lemon vanilla sugar cookie with basic royal icing. The whole process took me about 3 days, but it was not difficult at all.
I made the dough, rolled it out, cut out all the circles, and baked them.

After they cooled, I outlined each circle with royal icing.
Once the outline dried (a few hours), I "flooded" the cookies with royal icing and let them dry over night.

After the white royal icing dried, I decorated the clock "faces" with black cookie icing.
They were packaged after they were completely dry.
The finished favors!!
I had more pictures to show each step, but the computer is acting funny and not posting them like it should.   I really enjoyed making these cookies, and they actually tasted really good too! I see more decorated sugar cookie baking in my future!

It's Time...

One of the latest trends is to have a party to reveal the gender of the expected baby.  Jon and I debated on whether to have a party or not, and ended up deciding to have one.  I had an idea for the theme right away, but that was changed due to the time when we found out what the baby will be.  I knew I wanted something different, something I had not seen many people do.  I googled and brainstormed and finally came up with the theme of "It's Time."  I used clocks as the main decor and used a cuckoo clock as the reveal.  The biggest challenge was finding a cuckoo clock!  They don't sell those things in the stores, so I went to the internet.  I was shocked to see the price of cuckoo clocks!  I finally found a kids cuckoo clock from a company in Europe.  I told my mom about it and she found it on Amazon and ordered it for us.  I was so thankful!  Once the clock came in the party planning was in full force!  A local invitation shop was able to design and print the invitations exactly how I wanted them.  Then I planned out the menu.  Since it was in the late afternoon we served snack/appetizer foods.  Next, I decided to make clock cookies for the party favors.  (I will save those for a separate post.)  Everything came together really well.  It was a rainy day, but a fun and exciting afternoon.  I am so thankful for all our family and friends who came to celebrate with us!  We truly feel so blessed!

Jon's Mustache Bash (Part 2)

Here are a few pics of the party goers...

I really had a lot of fun planning this party! I think that everyone had a great time, and I know Jon did.  I can't wait for the next big party to plan! :)

Jon's Mustache Bash (Part 1)

Way back in February I had a birthday party for Jon for his 30th birthday.  I planned this party for over 6 months and I'm glad I did because it turned out great!  In the beginning I decided on the theme of mustaches and beer tasting.  I'm not sure why I decided on the mustaches but the beer tasting was because Jon is a big fan of beer and he's always trying new ones.  Here is a recap of some of the party via pictures...
